Runnin’ and Rocking Chicago
Oh my goodness where have I been?! This is the longest Blog Break I’ve had in quite awhile. I have missed reading what you’ve all been up to and missed posting as well. Small vacations, grand kids, family, and work have me pretty busy lately.
I am anxious to get back here to the #WeeklyWrap hosted by HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin.
I never did get around to recapping our trip to Washington and the RnR Seattle races so I thought I better not let RnR Chicago Half Marathon slip away from me as well. At least this one was only 2 weeks ago!! I am sort of still recovering as this was a big crazy weekend for us and I’ve been sick for the past week 🙁 boo hoo.
We took off Thursday morning, July 14th, and landed in Chicago that evening. Here we checked into our hotel, which was not nice enough to mention, but it was within walking distance to the start line. We didn’t really spend anytime at the hotel at all anyhow. We did not even have time for sleep.
Our first event of the weekend was Friday’s concert in Bridgeview, Chicago Open Air. This concert was Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. We didn’t show up right at 11 a.m. when it started, rather we went to the RnR Race Expo first. My cousin and her husband came in from Ohio to run with us. It was great seeing them again and we had fun having breakfast and expoing with them. We run at least a couple times a year with them, meeting all over the place. RnR Race Expo’s are the best. You could spend hours in there shopping around and sampling everything under the sun, but this weekend, we had to bail as soon as we got out race packs. Concert was awaiting!
Traffic in Chicago is worse than Los Angeles, I can tell you that. We ended up missing Drowning Pool and Hollywood Undead but DID get there in time to see In This Moment, Of Mice & Men, Hatebreed, Chevelle, and Rammstein. Friday was a great start to the 3 day concert! Also got to see this awesome rainbow!
All too early came our alarm on Saturday morning for the RnR Chicago 5K. As tired as I was, I was super excited to not only see my cousin again but we were meeting Amy from Twitter for the first time! We have been online friends for a long time now so it was so cool to actually meet her in person. My husband ran the race with Amy and I ran with my cousins. Very fun way to start the day.
After that, we got cleaned up, went to lunch with my cousin, and then hailed our Lyft. Concert day #2!! This evening we saw Pop Evil, Breaking Benjamin, Korn, and Disturbed. I have seen most of these bands before, as I am a concert junkie, but this was my first time seeing Disturbed and will NOT be the last. Great evening. We also met up with some of our “friends” from ShipRocked, which made it extra fun……that is until……
….that loud, loud alarm….it was time for Sunday morning’s RnR Chicago Half Marathon. My cousin took one look at me and told me what I looked like. It was a true statement. All four of us ran together which really kept me going. Even though it was my slowest half marathon, it was still a struggle. I had forgotten to eat dinner the night before (couldn’t tear myself away from the stage). Running on nothing, I will tell you, is not a super great idea. We did have a great time, the course was wonderful, and the weather was PERFECT! We had been promised heat and humidity and instead it was just perfect! Thank you Chicago for cooperating with us spoiled California runners!!
As we were walking back to our hotel, it down poured like crazy. It’s funny how lightening, thunder, and rain will just come out of nowhere. That is something we are not used to. Can’t complain though because by the time we got showered and met for lunch, it was nice out again. Then off we went for our last and final day of concerting!
Sunday was another exciting day in Bridgeview except I had blisters from the run so I couldn’t jump around as much as I usually do. We got there pretty late because we had been enjoying a nice, long, lunch with my cousins. We were pretty chill during this last day. We enjoyed seeing Marilyn Manson, FFDP, and Slipknot.
Although the preparation for race day was maybe not the best, I will say that anytime I can make a running weekend also a rocking weekend, I’m going to go for it!
THANK YOU CHICAGO FOR A ROCKING GOOD TIME!
