Carlsbad 5000 All Day 20K Race Recap
Let me start out by saying WOW! What a fun concept…..running 4 5ks in a row! This was my very first time running the Carlsbad 5000 All Day 20K but will definitely NOT be the last.
Before this race, I had only ever raced 1 5k in my life which was the 5k the night before the RnR Half Marathon Las Vegas 2014.Other than that, I usually run and train for half marathons.
Although I got into town too late the day before the race to enjoy the expo, we did get to enjoy a bit of Carlsbad. Who doesn’t love a great beach city? We sat on the patio and enjoyed a nice pre-race meal at 83 Degrees and may I say YUM!
Next morning, race morning – April 3, 2016, we drove back into Carlsbad for race day. Our target was 6:00 a.m. which we made and that was perfect. We easily found parking (free) really close to the start line and to the All Day 20K tent. Packet pickup was a piece of cake. The All Day 20K tent was set up very nicely with bananas, fruit cups, and water. The tent was also a great spot to meet up with friends before and in between races.
This was my very first race as part of the RockNBlog Team 2016. I was super happy to meet up with a few of the other ambassadors that I’ve only known online prior to this race.
I had no idea what to expect. I took off for the first race with the knowledge that the 2nd race would actually be my division (Masters Women). The first heat was the Masters Men division. Hubby did great running it in 21 minutes. Since he got in before me, he had time to get a shot of me crossing that first finish line which I crossed at 26:17. He ran the rest of the heats with me, at my pace…he’s the best! The 2nd race of the day which was my division turned out to be my best 5k of the day which is what I was hoping for 25:22.
It was fun and I loved the course! Most of the run is right along the ocean…racing while listening to crashing waves — so cool!
I felt fabulous while running heats 1 and 2 but then…..came numbers 3 and 4….. which I finished with much heavier legs. It felt really great to cross that finish line for that last time!
We both received a First 250 Finishers medal for finishing in the top 250 of our own heats and also this HUGE All Day 20K Medal (which is also a bottle opener). Pretty nice bling I’d say! We also got a nice long sleeve tech shirt, which I trained in yesterday, pictured below.
I think this race is wonderful speed training. I can totally see where running a few 5ks or 10ks in between half marathons could be very beneficial and FUN.
Oh, looking at these pictures reminded me to mention the weather! It. Was. Perfect.
After-Party: As usually, you know how Rock N Roll Marathon Series does…..GREAT after party with FREE beer and rocking ENTERTAINMENT
AND, as if this wasn’t all enough to make for a great race…we got to watch the Elites race!!! So impressive!
I definitely plan on making this a race that I run yearly. Next years pre-sale has already started. Race weekend will be April 1-2, 2017.
I am linking up with HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin for WEEKLY WRAP. I hope you will too!!
Have a wonderful week friends!!
