Since it’s almost time for one of my favorite races of the year, the Santa Rosa Marathon and Half Marathon, I thought I’d share last year’s recap with you.
You just may want to get in on the fun!
SANTA ROSA MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON RECAP
August 24, 2014
This year, like in 2013, my husband ran the full marathon and I ran the half. We really enjoy everything about The Santa Rosa Marathon and Half Marathon from the expo to the finish to the time spent in wine country.
Let’s start with the Expo which is held at DeLoach Vineyards.
What would you not love about a race expo at a winery? Right?! Here we were able to enjoy a complimentary tasting at the same time that we picked up our bottle of Runner’s Red.
After the expo, and after hotel check-in, we needed to find our pre-race meal.
We usually find a local Italian Restaurant to dine at pre-race but we couldn’t find the one we mapped out, I was too hungry to wait, and I’d been craving pizza for a long time! It was delicious and really hit the spot!
This race started like no other. Our alarm was set for 4:00 a.m. but we were shaken awake by a 6.0 earthquake at 3:20 a.m. It was the longest one I’ve felt in a while. From news reports, it looks like areas in Napa were hit the worst, some wineries included. Luckily, at least to my knowledge and hope this is the case, no one in the area was physically hurt.
The full marathon started while it was still dark out – 6:00 a.m.
The half marathon started 1 hour later at 7:00 a.m.
I like this course. It is straight out and back along Santa Rosa Creek Trail. It’s pretty flat the entire way. There are only a few tiny upgrades.
The full marathon is also a very nice course and runs right through DeLoach Vineyards.
This was the first time I ever ran with the Pacers and I am really glad I did! They are so great at keeping a perfect pace the entire race! I ran with Eugene and Christine, they were the 2:00 Pacers and they got me in at 1:58:07!
What really made it exciting was my timing with the marathon runners and the fact that I got to bask in their glory! See, the marathoners that were crossing the finish line with me were the ones that were trying to beat that 3:00 mark (they started an hour earlier). Therefore, as I was making my mad dash to finish my half sub 2:00, I could feel their amazing sub 3:00 excitement everywhere! The runners next to me, the sideline cheering, the announcer, it was all so exciting! It was nice to be right there to congratulate them as well.
The after-party included a pancake breakfast, beer festival, and our hoodie pick-up!
My husband also had a great race and another PR. We were off to celebrate!
After going back to the hotel and getting cleaned up we visited Downtown Santa Rosa.
We first went straight to the place we went last year for a post-run massage. Felt amazing! Jessie Jing’s Massage Therapy
After massage we enjoyed a delicious dinner at LaRosa Tequileria & Grille
I was satisfied but wiped out after the run, massage, and that huge burrito! Time to call it a night!!
We topped off our lovely wine country race experience by visiting DeLoach Vineyards once again on Monday. Their Pinot Noir is wonderful!
and also stopped down the street to visit Sunce Winery & Vineyard. We tried and enjoyed a variety of their wines as well.
We had a very wonderful weekend from start to finish and look forward to running The Santa Rosa Marathon and Half Marathon every year!
