LAGUNA HILLS MEMORIAL DAY HALF MARATHON
What a great way to start the day, Memorial Day, running in honor of USMC Dark Horse Battalion! It is always a treat to run near any member of our wonderful Armed Forces and this race provides just that. Side note: another great place is World Famous Mud Run at Camp Pendleton.
I wasn’t sure when I woke up in the morning how I’d be feeling after just completing the half marathon in Ventura the day before but I woke up feeling energized and excited to be running in this race.
Race morning here was very stress-free. Parking at the Laguna Hills Mall is easy and right next to the start line. The course is very nice with a few pretty good hills. Starts off running through Laguna Woods neighbor and welcoming residents. We then ventured out onto the streets of Laguna Niguel and back through Wood Canyon trail area to finish at the Community Center. It was quite a hot day for running but there were ample water stations and volunteers as well as emergency medical on hand. The final run was a kid’s race of 1/2 a mile which I was lucky enough to run with my 2 year old grandson. He had a blast and also received a special treat of the same exact medal I got for running the half marathon. They had run out of kid’s medals and were kind enough to hand out the rest of the HM medals as to not disappoint the young runners. I was impressed by his speed but mostly his enthusiasm for running. I’m sure this was his first of many future races!
